The African Methodist Episcopal University (AMEU) is one of Liberia's leading private universities, founded in 1995 under the auspices of the African Methodist Episcopal Church — one of the oldest African American denominations with a rich history of education on the continent of Africa.

Located on Capitol Hill in Monrovia, Liberia's capital, AMEU serves thousands of students across five undergraduate colleges, a graduate school, and professional development programs. Our History

1993

Foundation Vision

The African Methodist Episcopal Church begins planning for a university in Liberia to serve the educational needs of post-civil war reconstruction.

1995

University Established

AMEU is officially established and chartered, opening its doors to the first cohort of students on Capitol Hill, Monrovia.

1998

First Graduating Class

AMEU celebrates its first graduating class, with graduates entering key sectors of Liberian society.

2005

College Expansion

The College of Health Sciences and College of Technology and Engineering are established, expanding AMEU's academic portfolio.

2010

Graduate School Launch

AMEU launches its Graduate School, offering Masters programs for the first time.

2018

Campus Development

Major campus infrastructure expansion: new science laboratories, library upgrade, and digital learning center.

2022

Digital Transformation

AMEU launches its e-learning platform and expands professional development programs to reach working adults.

2024

Growth & Recognition
